Profit margin is a key financial metric that shows what percentage of your revenue remains as profit after covering the cost of goods. It is calculated by dividing the profit by the sale price and multiplying by 100. A higher profit margin means your business retains more money from each sale.
Profit margin is different from markup. Markup is calculated as a percentage of the cost, while profit margin is calculated as a percentage of the selling price. This calculator lets you enter any cost and markup percentage to instantly see your sale price, profit amount, and the resulting profit margin.
The total cost you incur to produce or purchase the item. A lower cost with the same markup gives you a higher absolute profit margin on each unit.
The percentage added on top of your cost to arrive at the selling price. A 12% markup on ₹1,00,000 gives a sale price of ₹1,12,000.
The percentage of the sale price that is pure profit. This is always lower than the markup percentage because it uses the higher selling price as the base.

Many business owners confuse markup with profit margin. While both measure profitability, they use different bases and give different percentages for the same transaction.
Markup is the amount added to the cost price to arrive at the selling price. It is expressed as a percentage of the cost. A 25% markup on a ₹100 item gives a selling price of ₹125.
Formula: Markup % = (Profit ÷ Cost) × 100
Profit margin is the profit expressed as a percentage of the selling price. For the same ₹100 item sold at ₹125, the profit margin is 20% & not 25%.
Formula: Margin % = (Profit ÷ Sale Price) × 100
Use this quick-reference table to convert common markup percentages to their equivalent profit margin percentages.
| Markup % | Sale Price (on ₹100 cost) | Profit | Profit Margin % |
